⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Edward Elric
Age:16 ish
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Canon Point: Episode 44ish (after recovering from his abdominal injury inflicted by Kimblee)

Background: Here.

Personality:
Edward Elric is one of those characters you can fairly easily describe as having a "firecracker" personality. He's loud, he's rude, he's stubborn, he's obsessively driven, he's got a notoriously short temper, not to mention a ridiculously low tolerance for bullshit. On the other hand he's also incredibly intelligent, fiercely loyal, protective and nurturing of those he cares about as well as generally believing in doing the right thing. Not afraid of calling people out on their bullshit, Ed is often dismissed as a rowdy kid who has no idea how the world works, but it's quite the opposite. While he may be naive due to being so young, there is quite a bit of fire to Edward that makes him stand out amongst other people his age.

When Ed has an opinion, he's not the type to keep it from people. If he thinks someone is incorrect, he'll state as much, and he'll do it in a manner that is blunt and to the point. Depending on the person involved and his level of familiarity and respect for them a good dose of ribbing or malicious mocking is also likely to follow. He's highly confident in his own intelligence and ability to figure things out, and is not beyond rubbing it in other people's faces when he's right and they're wrong. Throughout most of the series he's assured that the solution to everything is his -- and to a lesser extent -- his brother's ability in alchemy, from luring Scar out of hiding to getting his and his brother's bodies back -- he is certain that he has the capability, he's simply searching for a means.

This pride also fuels into his determination to accomplish his goals. A combination of pride and guilt as well as his stubborn attitude all constantly push him forward towards finding a way to restore his and Alphonse's bodies. He consistently pushes himself to the point of exhaustion -- even through mortal wounds that many others would likely be unable to proceed once experiencing. This is all mostly for his brother's sake, who's condition he harbors a great deal of guilt over. Despite the both of them admitting they made the mistake together, Edward takes a greater deal of that guilt onto his shoulders despite his brother's protests. This leads into a bit of a self-sacrificial streak, especially when it comes to the goal that he and Alphonse have, and Alphonse in general.

Generally speaking, Edward deals with sorrow and sadness poorly. He's far more likely to pack away the emotions and have them come out in other ways other than sadness than he is to mope around. Overall, he tends to shut people out when they try to coax him to deal with the emotions, in an effort to avoid being a burden or worry those who care about him. There are moments, generally at night when he's got time to think, that he has time to brood and mull over the things that bother him. However, in the heat of the moment Ed can be very emotive and will express sorrow and horror quite expressively, from his facial features to his posture and body language. Once again, his experience with Nina and her father is a primary example. Another example would be his recurring nightmares about his mother and the failed human transmutation that he and his brother attempted.

At both his best and worst moments, Edward has a terrible temper. This is especially evident when he feels like he is being slighted or talked down to. In particular, commenting about his height or how short he is is a serious rage button. No other way gets him more riled up quicker. Often times, his rage reaches comic levels over his height. Usually a good deal of shouting is involved, as well as physical reactions. In particular Ed launches an all out physical assault against Envy who doesn't quite catch on to what exactly is pissing Ed off so much. Overall though, he tends to have a short fuse, getting pissed off or angry at small things that his younger brother or colleagues and friends seem to manage to take in stride.

Related to his temper, Ed has a bit of a problem with authority. This issue is particularly evident in regards to those who have authority over him or weaker people. This often leads him into situations where he will willfully and purposefully undermine the authority of those people he respects very little. Even those who's opinion he has come to respect he's not beyond skirting around orders in order to do things the way he wants to do them.

Despite his temper and other negative traits, Edward is generally a good, generous person -- to those he thinks deserve it. If someone needs help and they cannot help themselves, Ed is not beyond helping them and feeling responsible for them to a point. This is reflected by the way he feels about Nina and what her father did to her. Because she was a young girl who wasn't capable of protecting herself from the things her father did to her, Edward felt responsible to the point of it shaking his belief that he could protect ANYONE, let alone just her. He still strives to protect the innocent who need help from someone like him. However, when he knows a person is capable of picking themselves up and driving forward under their own power, he is much more likely to give them words of wisdom and expect them to pull themselves together. If he was able to move forward with his life minus an arm and a leg, in his mind, there's no excuse for an able bodied person to be incapable of this themselves.

In the same vein, Ed has a very low tolerance for things he considers a waste of his time. Constantly on the move himself, both mentally and physically, wasting Ed's time is a good way to get him annoyed or angry quickly. More importantly, he's extremely impatient. When Ed does things he expects results in a timely manner and expects the ability to do this of himself and of others, especially people he's counting on. It's somewhat of a curiosity that he can manage to deal with long train rides as well as he does, considering the amount of pent up energy that it must cause.

Despite everything, those who have gained Edwards trust and respect can rely on him to be fiercely loyal and supportive ally. Though his methods of support may be understated, they are in fact there and honestly held. A great example of this would be the 520 cenz agreement he holds with Roy, in which he refuses to pay Roy back the money he owes him until Roy fulfills his goal of becoming the Fuhrer of the country. In this way, Edward both states that he supports Roy in his ambitions, but also believes that Roy will actually achieve them. In addition to supportive, Ed is also protective in a fierce way. This is exploited by the homunculi who are able to get him to mostly behave in a way that they want him to by using Winry as a hostage of sorts. This side of him is almost exclusively reserved for people like Alphonse and Winry, though it extends to others from time to time as well but not nearly to the extent of the two most important people in his life.

Abilities:
❖Alchemy
Edward, like many people in his world, has an extensive knowledge in the field of alchemy, enough of a mastery that he was able to become a state alchemist at an unprecedented young age. With the knowledge he's taught himself he is able to transmute materials into other more complete things, as well as pull things apart down into their basic components.

Edward is somewhat of a prodigy when it comes to Alchemy, having had the ability to grasp and understand the methods of human transmutation to the point where he was "successful". As a direct result of his attempt at human transmutation Edward has the additional, beneficial ability to disregard the need for a transmutation circle in order to perform his alchemy. Instead, he simply needs to clap his hands together in order to do what others require a transmutation circle for.

❖Fighting Ability
Edward has gone through rigorous training in order to be an alchemist while studying under Izumi Curtis. Under her guidance he was trained in hand to hand combat as well as survival techniques. As a result, he's quite fit and a capable brawler. As a result of his size and his training he is also quite quick, much faster than many others in his canon. He's only won a spar against his brother Alphonse once, but it doesn't really count. He has also on occasion used weapons he's transmuted himself, so he can also use a varied assortment of weapons. His most trusted however, is his habit of transmuting his automail into a bladed weapon that's attached to his body.

❖Intelligence
Edward is quite a bright young man. Not only is he bright in general, he is very well studied, particularly in his worlds concepts of science and more importantly in alchemy. He's well read, at least in the topics that he needs. This feeds into his ability to be quite adaptable in situations he needs to be, as he's quite a quick thinker and problem solver in tight situations.

Alignment: Sosyne. I briefly considered Sosyne as well as Piphron or perhaps Peromei but Edward's temper and overall anger is a big part of his character and would overall be the best fit for him. He sways more towards the angry end of things, especially compared to his brother.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Sample:

[Usually when you have a dream about falling the normal course of events lands you waking up in bed safe and sound. Edward's last recollection was anything but safe, but at the very least he was working on recovering in a hospital bed. Which is why upon waking up, his coat caught on the corner of a window ledge of a VERY tall building, all he can do is scream.]

WAAAHAH-HEY WHERE THE HELL AM I?! [He flails, legs kicking, arms reaching up to try and dislodge himself from his predicament. Until, that is, he thinks better of it.] ...if I do that I'm gonna fall and probably break my legs. [Crap. He's really not in the mood to get yelled at for breaking his automail again, either -- Broken bones aside. Instead, he looks down and grins. Looks like he can stretch and reach the ledge below him and maybe get footing enough to free himself safely.]

Alright! This'll be a piece ... [stretch.]... Of. [He grits his teeth, his scowl becoming quite determined as he strains but can't quite reach the ledge below. His foot barely grazes the tips of the petals of the flowers that reside on most of the ledge below.

Fuck. He's too short to do it from this angle. The realization touches something in Edward, and his expression changes, his lips twisted in a scowl before he opens his mouth to yell.]

YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME WHO PUTS FLOORS THIS FAR APART!? [The scream is hoarse, exasperated and fronting a deep seeded rage that honestly, more than just "borders" on Napoleonic. Even as Edward fumes, trying his best to stretch to his full length and get a toe on the ledge, the flowers below suddenly burst into flame, causing the blond boy to yelp and draw his frame upward away from the flames.]

Wh-what kind of joke IS this?! [It's exasperation and surprise all at once, but instead of lamenting further Edward grunts in determination and slams his flesh and metal hands together. Just as quickly he uses his momentum to swing himself forward, his hands slapping against the brick and mortar building. Out of it springs a series of small steps -- just the right spacing apart for Ed to easily stand upon and use to descend down to the ground.

Which is exactly what he does, once he unhooks his coat from the window ledge. The flames from before have already begun to fall lower, and honestly Ed's more concerned with practically running down the stairwell he's created than he is about some stupid flowers mocking him.]

What are YOU staring at, pal?! [Once Ed Lands, he wastes no time in confronting the first person he sees. His glare shifts sideways as his initial anger subsides. Above him, the flowers fall into a smoulder.] Didn't anybody teach you any manners? [It's a grumbled snipe, aimed at one of the passersby who just couldn't look away from the spectacle Ed's caused. He doesn't wait for an answer as he readjusts the white coat on his shoulders and moves to stalk away from the scene.]
